The region in Autumn - golden era

A gentle wake-up call for travel advisors:

the yachts leave, the truffles arrive, and the real stories begin.

slovenia and croatia travel itinerary

I will always be an unbiased expat DMC to make someone angry by being blunt.

First, let me say this:

I love summer Croatia. I sell summer Croatia.

I happily send people to Hvar, Dubrovnik, Korčula, Vis, Split, and luxury yachts all season long. I will also get their forgotten passports from the yacht to the airport!

But can we have a little industry intervention?

Because somewhere along the way, we've collectively decided that Croatia magically disappears around September. It doesn't. In fact, many locals would argue it finally starts making sense.

Summer Croatia Is Beautiful. Winter Croatia Is Real.

In July and August, Croatia is dressed up for guests.

In autumn and winter, Croatia sits down at the table with them.

The harvests begin. Families gather.

The wineries open their cellars.

The olive oil presses start turning. The truffles emerge.

Recipes that have been passed down for generations return to restaurant menus.

And suddenly your clients aren't just visiting Croatia. They're participating in it.

🍄 About Those "Summer Truffle Hunts"...

Let's have another friendly conversation.

Many travelers book truffle experiences during summer.

And yes, they're fun. But the real truffle season? That starts when temperatures drop.

From November through March, forests around Motovun and central Istria come alive with local hunters and their dogs searching for prized white and black truffles. Not demonstrations. Not planted surprises. Not tourist performances. The real thing. The chefs know it. The locals know it. The dogs definitely know it.

And if your clients are food lovers, this is when Istria becomes absolutely magical.

Wine Happens in Vineyards

Want your clients to understand Croatian wine? Send them in November when it is BAPTISING WINE (YES, WE DO THAT). Visit when cellars are active. When families are crushing grapes.

When conversations naturally happen around barrels instead of tasting notes.

The experience becomes less polished and far more memorable.

While much of the world is still trying to find parking and common sense of prices  in Dubrovnik, northern Croatia quietly continues being wonderful.

Have your clients heard of Varaždin? Most haven't.

Elegant Baroque streets? Historic squares? Local cafés. Authentic daily life.

And nearby? The spectacular Trakošćan Castle, one of the most beautiful castles in Central Europe.

Advent Is Not Just a Market. It's a National Sport.

Then comes December. And Croatia becomes festive. Not "we put up a few decorations" festive. Entire-city-transformation festive.

Advent Zagreb repeatedly earned recognition as one of Europe's best Christmas markets, and for good reason. But don't stop there.

Add Opatija.

Add Varaždin.

Add family traditions. And participate in family fights if you wish to (not recommended)

Add music, mulled wine, holiday customs, and local celebrations that are very much for Croatians first and tourists second. Those are usually the best experiences anyway.

So What Should We Be Selling?

The seasons of Croatia.

Summer islands.

Autumn harvests.

Winter traditions.

Because this destination isn't a three-month wonder. It's a year-round story.

And the advisors who understand that are creating experiences that go beyond "I visited Croatia."

They're creating experiences where clients say: "I felt like I got to know Croatia."

And honestly? That's where the magic happens.
